| Location Bay of
Islands, Sub-tropical South Pacific New Zealand
Harbour
House Villa is located on a promontory over looking the Bay of Islands
and the picturesque Opua yacht marina nestled between twin Norfork
Pines.
Privacy is the key
word. If you want a friend to find you, they would need directions to
find the path through the bush from the beach or to locate the secluded
Villa off of the dead end road.
Opua, Bay
of Islands
Over four hundred cruising yachts visit Opua each year. It
is the country's most northern "Port of Entry" which makes it an ideal
stop-over point on the way to or from the romantic "South Seas". The
basin also hosts an occasional cruise ships, but on average, less than
one a month finds this hideaway port cherished by the cruising sailors.
Ships entering or exiting the port pass below and in close proximity to
Harbour House Villa. The twice weekly sail boat races are easily viewed
from our rooms or spacious viewing deck and provide a colourful
panorama of brightly coloured sails set against a green hill backdrop.
Population
& Demographics
Opua's
population of four hundred is low key. The Wharf is the centre of
activity. No commercial traffic uses the port save an occasional cruise
ship. The Cruising Club, a small convenience store with take-away food,
a personable restaurant with fine cuisine plus a tiny Post Office
comprise the "Down-town-district" for this peaceful community. In
addition, there is a Marina and a few small boat yards in the vicinity,
but major industry and commerce are left for other parts of New
Zealand. The largest city Auckland, is approximately 130 miles (245 kms)
to the South.
Climate
New
Zealand Summer is from November to April because we are south of
equator. The northern part of New Zealand is closest to the
equator and receives the warm Equatorial current as it turns and starts
back across the South Pacific. The mountains to the southwest block the
cold winter winds. This tempered marine environment provides ideal
growing conditions. You will find avocados, bananas, papaya, lemons,
plums, peaches, apples, oranges, flowering daffodils, orchards,
hibiscus, gladiolas, etc. in our garden.
